Where to stay in Essaouira: medina, beach or countryside?

Start with your days, not just the photographs

Before comparing rooms, write down three journeys you will actually make: arriving with luggage, returning after dinner and leaving for your main activity. A property may suit one and complicate the other two. This is a way to choose a location, not a ranking of properties we have personally tested.

The medina for a stay focused on the town

The fortified medina is central to Essaouira’s UNESCO-listed heritage. If most of your plans involve exploring town, look for an address that fits those stops. Ask the property for a precise arrival point, the final route from your vehicle and help with luggage if needed.

Do not infer accessibility from the word “riad”. Check the room’s floor, stairs, bathroom access and route to the terrace. For quiet, ask where the room sits in relation to shared spaces and the street: a courtyard photograph tells you little about sound insulation.

The beach area for days organised around the ocean

Choose it to suit your plans, then check the actual route to the places you want to reach. “Sea view”, “near the beach” and direct access mean different things. Ask which room the photograph shows and whether you must cross any roads to reach the beach.

With children, confirm sleeping arrangements, meal options and safeguards in shared areas. If a pool is important, ask about its use on your dates; appearing in a photograph does not guarantee that it will be open.

The countryside for a stay centred on the property

For an address outside town, organise transport before booking. Ask for its exact map location, the final approach, parking arrangements and transfer options. Choosing somewhere for rest still requires a plan for meals and evening journeys.

Compare the whole stay’s cost: the room, daily transport, meals not included and any additional equipment. A lower nightly rate may lose its advantage if your plans require repeated trips. We do not guarantee a journey time or an average budget here.

Questions that help you choose between two offers

Check dates, guest numbers, the exact room category, included meals and extra charges. Ask about check-in and check-out, cancellation terms and arrangements for a late arrival. Keep the answers with your confirmation.

Browse the accommodation listed in Essaouira, then open the relevant property page. Being listed does not mean Essaouira.guide has tested the room. Match your choice to your one-to-three-day itinerary and planned activities, rather than a general promise of the “best area”.
